TEPCO’s Innovative Use of Drones in Fukushima Cleanup
The Fukushima decommissioning is on its way and will take decades. Drones will be implemented to perform the dark, dirty, and dangerous jobs and to keep human personnel safe. TEPCO announced recently that they have completed testing of the first drones to be deployed to the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The drones will be deployed alongside a snake-shaped robot in February of 2024.

Four-legged robots were used in pitch-black conditions to map an evaporator cell in the fuel cycle area of the Dounreay site in Scotland. Dounreay was the UK’s former fast reactor test facility, which operated from 1955 to 1994. It is now being decommissioned and ongoing clean-up and dismantling work is continuing. The use of robots helps to improve the safety by minimizing hazards and save the resources of the investigations.

Researchers from four British universities are studying how multiple robots can complete tasks as a team in hazardous environments such as in nuclear decommissioning. Demonstration included a mission in a simulated radioactive storage facility. The robots can communicate with each other by sharing sensor data via cyber physical system, which also allows creation of a 3D digital twin of a real space.

The Sellafield's Unmanned Aerial Vehicles team won the United Kingdom's Nuclear Manufacturing Award that was presented first time ever in October. The team has introduced drones for remote monitoring and inspection in several nuclear sites around the United Kingdom.

The robot dog Spot has found its place in the Sellafield facility. The Spot has inspected active areas without the need for humans to enter the hazardous zones. According to Sellafield Ltd, the Spot has accelerated clean-up work by enabling to start tasks originally planned to start at the late 2020s.

Decommissioning legacy nuclear sites is challenging for humans, but robots can assist in the decommissioning job. A robot called Lyra, that was named as one of the Best Inventions of 2022 by Time magazine, was developed in the University of Manchester and deployed to the Dounreay nuclear site in the United Kingdom for decommissioning tasks.
