Non-destructive testing of concrete structures in nuclear applications

| 2016:245 | Allan Lion Kristensen
The design of Nordic nuclear power plants with the liner cast in concrete poses a great challenge for non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. This project reviews the development since 2005 of the NDT methods that were tested in nuclear applications within the EU project CONMOD.

This report is divided into three main chapters:

  • A summary of the NDT methods used during the CONMOD project.
  • A summary of the predicted potential of the used NDT methods.
  • Developments in the used NDT methods.

Non-destructive testing methods are vital to verify the integrity of the containment of a nuclear power plant. A conclusion of the project is that the most promising NDT methods for nuclear applications are ground penetrating radar (GPR), high energy computed radiography (HECR) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW).
