Safety Demonstration Planning for Digital I&C Projects

| 2016:267 | Vikash Katta, Pontus Ryd, Janne Valkonen
When safety related instrumentation and control systems in a nuclear power plant are renewed, the licensee has to submit a safety demonstration to document that the change does not affect the safety of the plant in any way. This often results in vast amounts of documentation.

There are large differences in current practice in different countries for safety demonstration, as well as some common challenges.

This project has addressed some of these challenges by providing detailed guidance on how to plan and perform safety demonstration for digital instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants. A hands on safety demonstration plan guide was developed in a previous project, and this guide has been further refined in this project.

Process for Managing Ageing of I&C Equipment

The Instrumentation & Control (I&C) systems can be regarded as the nerves and brain of a nuclear power plant. Thus, effective processes for management of I&C ageing and obsolescence are crucial for maintaining safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants over time.
