The CoordiNet demo in Uppsala

The electricity grid in Uppsala is strained. To alleviate some of the pressure a local flexibility market for electricity power has been established as one of many solutions to secure the supply of Uppsalas growing demand for electricity.

The lack of capacity in the Uppsala electricity grid does not occur in the local distribution grid but is a limitation of the regional transmission grid. As such the process of planning and constructing a grid that can supply the municipality are significantly more complicated and will take a minimum of 10 years.

Before the capacity of the transmission grid is expanded, local solutions must therefore be explored. Together with Vattenfall distribution the Uppsala municipality have developed a new kind of local power market. The market gives large scale electricity consumers the ability to adapt their outtake of electricity by decresing their consumption or increasing their production when the grid is experiencing high levels of strain.
