Lifetime prediction of polymers in nuclear power plants 2022

| 2023:960 | Anna Bondeson, Henrik Toss, Mohit Pushp And David Kiefer
This report summarizes the results from the SAMPO project, which has been ongoing for four years. The purpose of the project was to establish relevant acceptance criteria for the components' lifespan and to improve material handling through methods such as online monitoring of materials.

Within SAMPO safety criteria and improved aging management research for polymer components exposed to thermal radiation environments was the focus. SAMPO was a collaborative project in cooperation with VTT in Finland and RISE, conducted in close collaboration with the nuclear power industry. Polymer researchers worked together with experts in sensor technology and sensitive analytical techniques to enhance the understanding of how plastic and rubber materials degrade during long-term use in nuclear power plants.

Silicone rubber in nuclear power plants: prediction of service lifetime in moist conditions

Components made of silicone rubber are used in Swedish nuclear power plants. Elastic polymer sealants used in pipe transits and joints are examples of applications. It is known that silicone rubber does not resist LOCA. The question is how silicone rubber components behave at normal service conditions.

Use, limitations and possibilities of Arrhenius based extrapolations for LTO studies of polymeric materials

Long-term operation of nuclear power plants relies on reliable ageing management of polymeric materials used in safety‑relevant components such as cables, seals and gaskets. Predicting their long‑term performance is essential for safe operation and informed decisions on lifetime extension. This study examines the use of Arrhenius‑based extrapolations in accelerated ageing tests for polymeric materials.
