The Benefits of New Smart Meters and Unbalanced Grid Models for Increased Digitalization

The study illustrates potential to solve the essential system challenges using license-free open-source tools and available 15-minutes measurements from smart-meters. The project results pave the way for further discussions on benefits of distribution systems digitalization and using of open-source tools and file formats to model, analyse and exchange information about the distribution systems’ planning and operation.

The Benefits of New Smart Meters and Unbalanced Grid Models for Increased Digitalization
Digitalization of distribution systems and deployment of new smart meters brings new capabilities to solve the challenges related to the distribution systems’ operation and planning. By using open-source tools, this project applies these capabilities on a case study of the Swedish distribution system to better estimate system’s PV hosting capacity under unbalanced operating conditions as well as to identify and characterize non-technical system losses.
