Replacing obsolete nuclear instrumentation and control equipment

Updated 2024-08-14 Published 2019-02-18

The Nordic nuclear fleet of today consists of a mix of technologies for safety I&C. In the coming years a considerable amount of systems and equipment must be replaced or upgraded because of different aspects of aging. This report explores the challenges and opportunities of different approaches to maintenance of old analogue equipment.

This report maps different ways of equipment maintenance across Europe and presents cases and experiences for the Nordic nuclear power industry to learn from. Maintenance approaches such as: replacement, repair, refurbishment, reengineering, reverse engineering or remanufacture are explored and discussed.

The investigation shows that re-engineering and reverse engineering are readily available options that could be explored further as it is not always clear when it is the best option. The authors recommend to always evaluate this option together with other solutions when deciding what to do with an obsolete system or part.

New method for investigating concrete structures in nuclear power plants

Nuclear power, which accounts for about 30% of Sweden's electricity production, plays a crucial role in delivering fossil-free electricity. As many nuclear power plants are approaching the end of their planned lifetime, it is crucial to extend their operating periods to meet current and future needs. Markus Nilsson at Lund University has spent four years investigating how non-linear ultrasonic methods can be used to detect and assess corrosion in concrete-embedded containment liners in nuclear power plants. The work has resulted in a doctoral thesis.

"Lifetime extension of nuclear power needs more focus"

The Life After 60 – Long Term Operation of Nuclear Power conference, hosted by Energiforsk last week, was fully booked. The importance of lifetime extension, the need for competence, and why green politicians acknowledge the necessity of nuclear power were three key topics that resonated throughout the event.
