Curriculum Introduction to rock foundations for dams

Points: 2 hp (ECTS)

Time: 17-19 October 2022

Objectives: To gain basic knowledge about rock as a construction material, stability analyses of concrete dams founded on rock, and design of grout curtains. After completion of the course the student will:

  • Understand the fundamental differences between rock as a construction material and other types of manufactured materials such as steel and concrete
  • know the fundamentals of stability analyses of concrete dams founded on rock
  • be able to calculate the reliability of the dam using first order reliability based methods and Monte Carlo simulations
  • Know the basics in the design of grout curtains under dams
  • Be able to perform basic calculations for the design of grout curtains under dams
