Integrating electrical resistivity results interpretation with numerical flow modelling for detection of internal defects in embankment dams

Publicerad 2023-09-11

This project aims to develop improved monitoring techniques for early detection of internal erosion in embankment dams. The objective is to assess electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) as a long-term monitoring technique in embankment dams and evaluate its capability for discovering and locating defects caused by construction deficiencies or internal erosion.

To test and assess flow modeling using 3D finite element method (FEM) models, the design is guided by the ERT results for characterising the hydraulic consequences of the internal defects. The benefit would be a non‐destructive set of tools for monitoring and integrity control of embankment dams, designed to detect defects inside the dam core. The specific objective of this project is to work with electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring data from two embankment dams, namely the Älvkarleby test dam and the dam upstream of the old power station in Näs.
