Two-face flow modeling: Evaluations and simulations for safer spillway discharge

A flood discharge structure concerns the safety of the dam. lf the flow velocity exceeds 20 m/s, there is a risk of cavitation. In Sweden, many dams belong to this category. To protect the structures, the flow is usually aerated artificially, e.g. through an aerator.

The aerator forms an air cavity, from which air entrained inta the flow.  With the transport of air in the water, air detrainment occurs downstream of the air cavity. It is the air concentration close to the bottom that protects the chute bottom from cavitation.

The project is based on previous and ongoing research performed at KTH within hydralic design. It refers to a natural continuation of evaluating numerical modelling methods closely related to air-water flows in spillway structures.
