SVC Research School autumn 2024

During week 41 you have the chance to learn more about Synchronous generators for Hydropower Applications and Structural Engineering for hydropower structures.

SVC Research School place during week 41.The first part 7-9 October is about Synchronous generators for Hydropower Applications and the second part 9-11 is about Structural Engineering for hydropower structures. This is a good opportunity to gain new knowledge and to understand the current state of research.

COURSE 1: Synchronous generators for Hydropower Applications, 7-9 October

Prerequisites: Basic Electricity knowledge, Ohms law, Inductance, electrical circuits

Course aim: To provide a basic understanding of generators, their construction and their behaviour on the grid.

Contents: Repetition basic electricity concepts, three phase systems, electrical energy conversion, design of electrical machinery, magnetic circuits, airgap flux density, stator winding layout, induced voltage, the generator on the grid, transmission of power, stability and regulation.

Realization: Lectures, exercises and laboratory, small study project

Examination: Written exam

Examinator: Professor Urban Lundin, Division of Electricity, Department of Engineering Sciences, Uppsala University, telephone 018-4715824, Additional helper Vinicius Albuquerque

Place: Uppsala University, Sweden

Date: 7-9 October 2024, week 41

COURSE 2: Structural Engineering for hydropower structures

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge in physics, mathematics and structural mechanics.

Course aim: The aim of this course is to give basic knowledge about the physical and mechanical behaviour of concrete dams and to give basic knowledge about analysis, design, condition assessments of concrete dams and other hydraulic structures regarding their structural safety and condition assessment.

Contents:

  • Material behaviour of concrete and reinforced concrete
  • Concrete dams and other hydraulic structures
  • Durability aspects
  • Dam safety and potential failure modes
  • Loads
  • Design principles
  • Numerical analysis
  • Survey of existing structures
  • Measurements and data analysis,

Examination: A project assignment regarding the structural behaviour of a concrete dam will be given at the start of the course. The course participants should solve the tasks and submit a project assignment report to the examiner. After the report has been accepted, the examiner will report the credits. Participation in the lectures and the computer laboratory is mandatory.

Course lecturers: Andreas Sjölander (KTH), Erik Nordström (VRD/KTH)

Place: KTH Stockholm

Preparation: Information regarding preparation will be sent out to participant before the course.
