The Decommissioning of Swedens first Commercial Reactor – Ågesta Nuclear Power Plant

How do you decommission an old Nuclear power plant? In this webinar, we look at how Sweden’s first commercial reactor is being decommissioned.

The Ågesta NPP was in operation between 1964 to 1974, the reactor was a PHWR and supplied district heating to the suburb Farsta. The owner Vattenfall started the dismantling in 2020 and the program is nearing completion.

What challenges have the different projects faced and what solutions have they used? In this webinar, Nicklas Tjernlund from Vattenfall, will give an overview of the site and show some of the techniques and methods used in the decommissioning, and look into what lessons have been learned over the years of dismantling.

Nicklas Tjernlund will present some of the techniques and methods used in the decommissioning, such as:

  • Robots used in the dismantling
  • Lifting of storage tanks
  • Cutting of blowdown tanks
  • Removal of activated concrete.
